An Insurance adjustor is the one who investigates the claims against the insurance company or other companies for personal, casualty, or property loss or damages and attempts to effect out-of-court settlement with the claimant.

Job Profile of the Insurance Adjuster

The Insurance Adjuster examines the claim form and other records to determine insurance coverage. He interviews through telephone or corresponds with claimant and witnesses about the disputed case. He also consults the police and hospital records and inspects property damage to determine the extent of company's liability, using varying methods of investigation based on the type of insurance.

The Insurance adjuster prepares report of his findings and negotiates settlement with the claimant. The adjustor recommends litigation by legal department when a settlement cannot be negotiated. He would also be present at the litigation hearings.

More insurance adjuster’s jobs are either within the vehicle or with automobile insurance industry. Those types of insurance adjuster jobs include working directly with drivers and other parties who have been involved in vehicle accidents or have experienced damage to vehicles. The insurance adjuster gathers information from all parties including the drivers and then acts as the insurance claims representative by basing the financial claim on actual findings and the insurance policy guidelines to settle for an amount equal to or less than the value of the insurance policy.

Other insurance adjuster jobs are within the home and commercial or property insurance industry. The job involves physically visiting and inspecting the property to decide if it can be insured based on specific conditions. The property owner must meet these conditions in order to be financially covered in the case of damage from natural or man-made causes. The adjuster will negotiate with the consumer and make adjustments to the amount of the cash settlement with the insured should an event occur that prompts an insurance claim.
