Auto Insurance without a Valid Driver License

Some circumstances can put a person in a situation where he approaches an insurance company for obtaining auto insurance without having a valid driver’s license.  The states require that all vehicles are insured irrespective of circumstances. This means that the car owner can obtain auto insurance for the car and another driver to be protected against any losses arising out of anything happening to the car. Most elderly and visually handicapped people may own a car but they may not have a driver’s license. They can obtain get their vehicles insured with other legally qualified drivers listed on their policy.   Not all insurance companies will provide cover to those with no valid license, but there are some insurers who will, depending upon your situation. The cost of this policy may be slightly more than a regular car insurance policy.

Most of the auto insurance companies ask for your social security number to provide you the coverage you need. They do not ask for your license number as they can get your driving records through the social security number you provide.  They can know if your license has been suspended. It is better to tell them about it rather than they finding that you have no valid driver’s license.

If your license has been suspended for some reason but you have auto insurance, your insurer will insist that you should reinstate your driver’s license within 30 to 45 days to keep your policy alive. Other wise your policy will expire after the grace period ends. If you allow the insurance to expire, you will be classified as a driver with suspended license without auto insurance which will attract fines and serious consequences.

Drivers with learner’s permit
If the driver has only a learner’s permit which means that the driver is new the auto insurer will still provide cover if he passes driving tests and shows proof of his learner’s license.   If the driver is a teenager he can be added to the policy of his parents or guardians.   Once he gets his driver’s license he has to produce it as a proof to his insurance company.

International Driver’s License

International visitors with their International Driving Permit (IDP) can visit the state Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain their driver’s license from that state. Those possessing IDP can obtain auto insurance without a driver’s license but must obtain the license from the state within the stipulated time allowed for getting auto insurance cover.  To be able to avoid the consequences of driving with no auto insurance it is better to put in a little work to find a policy that fits your needs even without having a valid driver’s license.
