Even after your vehicle’s tag has been expired, you can drive the vehicle. You can drive your car with expired tag for almost 30 days but however, the validity period may differ from one state to another.
Once your car tag expires, you can get ticket anytime from the traffic authorities. Instead of paying fine all the time, you are advised to renew your tag as soon as possible or register your vehicle within the state grace limit. In some states, you can start driving your vehicle only after you get the registration certificate whereas some states allow you to drive your new vehicle within 3 days of purchasing.
When your vehicle’s tag has expired, you will be given a notice by the court. The judge will decide the penalty charges on your case. Once you receive the notice, you will be warned not to let the tags expire but you can still drive the vehicle. However, you must renew or register your vehicle within the probation time given by the court after the tags have been expired. Citations are meant to be followed as per the decision of the court and the traffic authorities. If you still drive the vehicle even after the expiry of the grace period, then you are doing an illegal activity. It will be considered as an offence by the law and a heavy fine should be paid for it.
Sometimes,it may happen that you have applied for the registration but haven’t received the original DMV. At such time, you must get a proof of the application from the DMV’s office ad carry it with you whenever you are driving with expired tags.Your car is still legal even after the expiry of the tag but it is your duty and responsibility to renew the tag or get new registration.Until you get the tags renewed, you must be ready to get several tickets from the police. This can be troublesome and harassing as you have to pay fine and visit the court again and again.
If you are driving the vehicle with expired tags, you must carry a copy of the proof that your registration is yet to come.You must have those documents that show you have already applied for renewal or have requested for registration of your vehicle. Until you are ready to accept tickets for driving with expired tags, you must not drive the vehicle. However, driving with expired tags is possible under certain conditions of the law.
