Driving with Expired Permit or License

It is illegal to drive without a license or permit and driving with an expired or suspended license.   The expired license is an indication that you had a valid license in the past but did not renew it. Depending upon the jurisdiction you will be fined after being pulled over for a moving violation. In California, you must renew your driving license within 60 days of its expiry date without having to pay a late fee. You must also carry proof of financial responsibility to be able to drive on the roads.

How to renew an Expired License
Your can renew your driver’s license in different ways. You may go online or send a mail or go in person to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It is better to check your renewal date well in advance and renew it in time to avoid penalties.  If you are caught driving with an expired license you will be cited by the police and will have to pay penalties and additional charges for renewal.

Penalty for driving with an expired license will vary between $30 and $250 depending on the length of time that has passed after the expiry of your license. You may be detained and your car may get impounded. Sometimes the officer may issue a citation that will remain in your driving record for long years and affect your auto insurance rate adversely. Some officers may even let you go with a warning. If you are pulled over and cited for driving with an expired license, you can approach the court for removing the citation after demonstrating that you have renewed your driver’s license.    This process requires your personal appearance in the court. This may involve court fees and a nominal fee for removal of citation.

The best way to avoid the hassles of court appearance is to renew your driver’s license in time and always carry a current valid license while driving. Remember that your license has to be renewed on your birthday every four years and it is your responsibility to renew it before the expiry date.

Learner’s Permit
California State requires that new drivers must obtain their learners’ permit for ultimately obtaining their divers’ license.   If you permit expires, you must produce documentation for having undergone the driver’s classes and pay a fee of $27 and take another written test.  Driving with an expired license is a motoring offense so you must carry your license always when you are driving.
