Effects of Getting Pulled Over Without Insurance

When you are pulled over and are found without insurance the officer should cite you the reason for stopping you on traffic (speeding, running a red light, etc). However, if you cannot produce proper proof of auto insurance or show an expired / invalid insurance card then you are liable for punishment for driving without insurance. The immediate effect will be impoundment of your vehicle, heavy fine and you can even be jailed.

Major Consequences of getting pulled over without Insurance

Driving without insurance and getting caught has various consequences in different states. But most of the courts will give strong punishments for this offense.

    1. The Worst case is that, if you are involved in an accident and you are at fault and then you get caught without any nsurance, the penalties that you incur in such cases are even larger including paying for any and all damages caused in that particular accident.
    2. If you get pulled over, the officer who does so would have to the mention the reason in the ticket why you were pulled over and clearly mention that you had been driving without insurance. In those circumstances it is very important for you to produce a valid or expired insurance card, as failing this will also be registered as a complaint against you. The penalties for driving without auto insurance will differ from state to state. Some courts will have your car impounded or the tag of your car taken away or some other courts might charge you with heavy fines. There are also some state courts that expect you to spend a few hours in jail if you are caught driving without insurance.
    3. Your driving privileges will be revoked by immediately suspending your driver’s license. You can get your license re-instated by getting an SR 22 filed with the state DMV.  For this you should approach an insurer who specializes in SR 22 auto insurance and get your liability auto insurance and the insurer will file the SR 22 on your behalf.
    4. There is no doubt that the fines and the punishments will cost you heavily, if you are responsible for an accident or any damage caused to life and property. Then you would be held fully responsible for financial losses you cause to others.
    5. In some states, driving without insurance is a criminal offense, if you are involved in some serious traffic violations or reckless driving etc. You will be charged with criminal offense, if you are unable to show any insurance. It is obvious that would result in huge fines and punishments. In these cases, such violations and the incurred penalties are recorded in your driving record and are maintained in the record for a period 3 to 10 years. This may affect your career and life seriously.
    6. The most important factor is that even after punishment, if you are pulled over and being unable to produce proof of insurance it will be very difficult for you to get you insurance reinstated. Because of the driving track record, most of the insurance companies might not find you to be reliable enough as they will have enough proof that you had been driving without insurance on your vehicle and have a feel that you are so irresponsible to let your insurance to expire.
    7. Your inability to show the insurance for your vehicle when you were pulled over might also prove that you skipped payments deliberately to an insurance agency which would make it more difficult for you to get a new policy.
    8. Almost all the sates of United States of America consider driving without insurance as a serious offense. Though different courts impose different penalties and punishments, fines and jail term for the offense, you will certainly be penalized.
