Issues of Car Insurance for Travelers

There are various issues of insurance coverage while driving a vehicle that does not belong to you particularly when traveling. The easiest, best, reliable and the fastest method to find out what kind of coverage is required on a rental or non-owned vehicle is to call and check with your insurance company or check with the employer in case you are driving the vehicle of your company. Call and check with your company of credit card as well in case you are planning to rent a vehicle. Check with them if they provide any sort of insurance coverage while using the credit card for renting a vehicle and if there is one particularly what kind of coverage and what are the limits of it.

First if you are an employee and you are driving vehicle of your employer. Every company vehicles are not insured by the insurance company with the policy. Few vehicles of the company are self-insured. Hence, employee driving the vehicle of the company is required to have knowledge as different rules are applied. You also need to check if the company insures someone other than the employee to drive the company vehicle and are you permitted to drive the company vehicle outside the state or country.

Second is if you are planning to rent a car, ensure that you have given the licenses and names of all the people who are going to drive the rental vehicle to the company offering rental car. In case you are planning to drive the car out of the state or country that is also supposed to be mentioned to the rental, as you might not have insurance coverage if you take the car across the border. So regarding this, you need to check it from your insurance company.

Some people think that the personal car insurance gets transferred automatically to a rental vehicle, which is not true always. Check with your insurance policy there are terms "Temporary Substitute Vehicle" and "Non-Owned Vehicle". Few insurance policies clearly differentiate between the two.

Third is if you are visiting to your relatives or friends while traveling and you are planning to drive the car, you are required to check whether the same limits of coverage are transferred to the driver other than the insured name or else the coverage gets lowered to the requirements of minimum state liability coverage for instance a friend of the insured is the driver. Hence, it is required to check with both insurance companies one is with yours and the other is of the vehicle you are in.

Do not get intimidated by the Medical payments coverage as it is applied to the injuries persisting by the occupants of the vehicle that is insured that involves the insured driver as well as every passenger in spite of liability. In case you are a passenger or a driver in a qualified vehicle that is non-owned you are covered for Med Pay. Keep in mind that there are rules against and limiting for duplication of coverage.
