Rules for Expired Registration Tags in US

The Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) cannot extend your expired registration or tags in almost all states of United States. You cannot operate your vehicle if the registration is expired. In most of the states of United States, you have to register your motor/car once per year. You can renew a registration up to one year after the registration expires. The specific rules of DMV in your state have to be checked out as they may vary in different states of United States.

You can renew a vehicle registration by mail, by telephone, on-line or at DMV office in your state.
By Mail
DMV mails a registration expiration notice to you 45 to 60 days before your registration expires. Follow the instructions on a renewal notice that you received to renew your registration by mail. You will receive your registration documents by mail in two weeks.
By Telephone
To new your motor vehicle registration, you call DMV. There is no additional fee charged by DMV if you go for registering by telephone. You will receive your registration documents by mail in two weeks.
By On-line
You can renewal your vehicle on-line if there is no change in your address and if your vehicle is a passenger vehicle, a small commercial vehicle, a small trailer, or a motorcycle that you did not remove from the road. You will receive your registration documents by mail in two weeks.
At DMV Office
To renew at DMV Local office, use renewal instruction received by you through mail or use FORM MV-82.   If another person brings application to the office, that person must follow the requirements for a second party registration application. The DMV office issues your registration documents to your immediately.
The DMV prints a registration renewal notice many weeks before the notice is mailed.  The DMV mails the registration renewal notice to the registrant 45 to 60 days before the current registration expires. The DMV does not print a renewal notice if your vehicle registration is suspended. If you do not receive a renewal notice, the DMV cannot print another notice for you.
 
Your registration renewal fees are showed on your renewal notice. , If necessary, remember to include the vehicle use tax and the annual fee for custom plates.
