Steps for Filing Auto Insurance Claims

Being in an accident can be the most terrifying experience of a person’s life. This is true even in the case of no bodily damage to the person. Those few seconds are forever itched into the mind of the person at the wheel and will return back to haunt them. Even in such times, it is important to keep your head on your shoulders and think clearly. Filing auto insurance claims forms are a nightmare, it is considered. But, by following a few steps you can make it quite easy. After all, it is no rocket science.

The most basic thing to keep in mind and follow is to keep your insurance card with you at all times. This also facilitates easy access. The card carries a whole lot of information right from what type of coverage you have to emergency contact numbers. Be sure to keep the card on you at all times. Another thing to do is to call in and inform the insurance company of the occurrence as soon as possible. You should keep the insurance company informed of the situation at all times and during every step of the process.

For a claim to be properly supported some or the other kind of documentation is required by the company. Keeping a record of the names and contact addresses turns out to be really helpful while filing in your insurance company forms. Other details such as weather and visibility are also to be made note of as they might be required while filing the claims form. Any report made by the police is also required. Make a copy of it and keep it handy. This along with a proof of claim form that is given by the insurance company is also required.

After you filed in the claims forms and given out as much information as you can to the insurance company, your job is to sit back and wait for the situation to develop all by itself. If there is any confusion or fight over whose fault the accident it, you might wait for a call from the other person’s insurance company, asking for your take on the turn of events and the responsibility of the accident. Take a stand and stick to it. Remember the insurance agent you spoke with and also keep a record of the conversation, just in case.

Whatever the car’s condition maybe, your case would be assigned to a claims adjuster. A body shop will be asked to evaluate the level of damage sustained by the car. An estimate for repairs is complied and sent to the insurance company. If the cost of repairs is almost or even eighty percent of the car’s retail value, the car is considered totaled.

Even though the accident scared the living daylights out of you, keep a calm head and deal with the situation without succumbing to panic attacks. Keep these few things in mind to make filing claims forms and following up lot easier.
