With so much of news about rash driving resulting in road accidents and casualties due to drunk driving in newspapers, news channels etc. every other day, its natural to think why do we continue to drive under the influence? To answer generically, one may say that when heart rules mind, one may not resist drinking even though he may have to drive. But there are more insightful causes when we attempt finding why people continue to drive under the influence.
As is statistically proven, the number of accidents of youngsters while driving under the influence is higher than age groups above 25. The fact that young people who more aptly visit clubs, bars or go partying, get drunk under the inspirational environmental there. The energetic crowd is energetic and company of friends having multiple rounds of drinks desist the designated driver from staying away. Moreover, driver getting drunk at such places occur usually due to peer pressure too.
An uncaring attitude about the consequences and ignorant intoxication are equally important causes why people drive under the influence. People often don’t understand that this ignorance is as a result of intoxication or having drunk as alcohol characteristically inhibits senses, hampers from checking drinking limits and deviate away from driving rules.
Some people are habitual drinkers as a way to counter some sort of depression or unhappiness. Unfortunately they do not tend to desist from this act if they have to drive. Occasions of festivity, weddings, anniversaries or other celebrations are a reason to party and by default encourage us to take part in “small amounts” of liquor. Our peer pressure this time gets replaced by emotional attachment, thus becoming another cause of continued driving under the influence.
Conclusively speaking, it is not an allotted task for psychologists to study the causes behind drunk driving. It is an individual decision and an introspective approach to find why we continue to drive under the influence!
